ABOUT

The Mission

YBTN exists to support, empower and equip Black teachers in England to be the best educators they can be, progress into leadership and to understand the impact we have on our students, more specifically young black boys and girls.

Our overall goal is to welcome those with a passion for young people into the profession, retain those who are already in the profession by ensuring they feel valued and are aware of opportunities into leadership, working closely with teaching and non-teaching staff, local authorities, outside agencies and those in government. We aim to build a network of Black professionals represented  at all levels in the education sector. This is needed to raise aspirations of ourselves and the next generation.

The Vision

To see an increase of more black teachers in the education sector and leadership roles, making decisions that will positively impact our school communities. We aim to do this through professional development events and workshops, collaboration with other brands, networks and recruiters. With Black teachers making up less than 3% of the teacher workforce, YBTN is a community that is determined to see the amount of black teachers reflect the ethnic make-up of the state school pupil population in England.

Core Values

Our values reflect the nature and demands of teaching in England. They are important to us because they shape and guide the way we work:

1. Generational growth - Making a difference in the lives of those we teach and to teach is to serve. By serving the next generation and breaking away from negative stereotypes of Black people, future generations will aspire to do better and be better than the generation before and continue the foundation of excellence that has been laid.

2. Service excellence - ensuring we’re there for those in the network, by supporting, motivating and inspiring them to progress in their roles. All members of the team are professionals, who take pride in their roles as educators. The service you receive from members of our team via email, social media and/or in person will be of a high standard.

3. Growing the brand - we hope to make YBTN international through collaboration. No matter where our teachers are, they will receive a clear concise message of what YBTN is about, our mission and the opportunity to connect with others in the network.
